Project Northland -- Underage Drinking Prevention for Junior High School Students
Project Northland is a comprehensive research-based program designed to be implemented over a three-year period during grades 6-8 and involves students, parents, teachers and the community at large.
The prevention curriculum, published by Hazelden, uses comic book characters to help young people talk with their parents about alcohol (sixth grade Slick Tracy Home Team Project), deal with peer pressures to use alcohol (seventh grade Amazing Alternatives), and develop community wide changes in alcohol-related programs and policies (eighth grade Powerlines).
Additional Activities
Family Nights/Parenting Classes: The LEC sponsors family nights for sixth grade students whose schools will participate in the 7th grade Amazing Alternatives and 8th grade Powerlines components of Project Northland. The evening provides a fun format for students to share with their families what they’ve learned as part of Project Northland’s Slick Tracy Home Team Program.
PSA Contest: A Public Service Announcement contest for 7th and 8th graders has been developed and winning entries produced and broadcast on WVLI/WRIV FM Radio during the program's community awareness campaigns in October and April.
